“We could still be friends.”

Friends with your ex. Luke had never thought it was possible. Hell before Noah he didn’t HAVE an ex to stay friends with. And friends with Noah.. that hadn’t worked out so well either. He smiled to himself. Just friends with Noah.. who had they been trying to kid. They had always been so much more than just friends.. and still were. He had tried to move on with Reid, tried to forget Noah.. but all of them knew deep down inside that it was just a matter of time until Luke would be back with Noah. When Luke had made his decision and went to tell Reid.. he already knew and Luke found himself uttering that one little line.. the biggest cliché in the world of relationships.

“We could still be friends.”

Reid had shrugged  it off and told him to just go be with Noah. That they could be at least civil to each other if he’d come with when Noah had an appointment with him. He was still his doctor after all and wanted to keep an eye on his work. His best work to date even if he did so himself. Reid hid behind his ego.

That’s when Luke had left for Noah’s dorm after stressing at least one more time that he really did still want to be friends with the other man. They got along well.. mostly. Just not.. romantically. Reid challenged him, Noah loved him no matter what. They were so different and so similar at the same time. The only difference was, he loved Noah more than anything in the world and Noah loved him back. With Reid.. sure he was easy on the eyes but it hadn’t been love. Never was, never would be. Not like that.

And things had been weird in the beginning. He’d had the feeling Reid had avoided places he knew Luke and Noah came often. But slowly, gradually things had become almost normal. And Luke really felt he had a friend in Reid. Someone to talk to after a fight with Noah or just to catch up to see what was happening in the other’s life.

“We could still be friends.”

“I guess it really is possible.” He mumbled, staring at his reflection in the mirror.

“You know talking to yourself is the first sign of madness.”

Luke jumped and turned around.

“Oh and I guess you’re the expert on these things?”

“It’s what it says on my degrees. Now come on, they’re waiting for you out there.”

Luke nodded.

“I’ll be right there.”

The door closed and Luke quickly checked his appearance in the mirror one last time and straightened his tie. He wanted to look his best today. He took a deep breath, opened the door and walked inside.

Inside the church filled with his closest friends and family. He looked around and saw Jade and Casey with their daughter and Maddie with her new boyfriend. A little further to the front were Ali and Aaron and Luke hoped their son wouldn’t decide today was his day to come out. Sure he was happy his brother was becoming a dad but today.. today was his special day.

Luke saw the first row was filled with parents and his grandmothers and his younger siblings. Natalie, his little sister who wasn’t so little anymore now and his baby brother Ethan who would be starting his senior year of high school in September. And Faith.. Faith who had followed her dreams that had taken her around the world a few times. They were all there today, like he’d always hoped they would.

And then he saw her in the second row, happily playing with her godfather’s tie. The only girl he’d ever love. The girl he’d fallen head over heels in love with the first time he’d seen her. He gave her a little wave when he walked past her to his place at the front.

“Hi sweetie.”

The girl looked up and smiled at him.

“Hi daddy.”

“You be good to your uncle Reid ok? You can join us later.”

“We’ll be fine. Now go. Someone’s waiting for you up there.” Reid said and nodded toward the front of the church.

“Yeah.. I guess you’re right about that.” Luke said and took his place. “Hey you, long time no see.” He said to the man next to him.

“I’ve been standing here waiting for you for 15 minutes. I was beginning to think you’d changed your mind and ran off  with Reid instead.”

Luke laughed.

“After all this time? And don’t you think Reg would have something to say about that?”

“Ah I guess I could’ve married him instead.” Noah joked.

“The only person you’re marrying is me mister.” Luke said and took his hand, lacing their fingers together. “Besides, it would be too much of a hassle for them to change the names everywhere.. and I don’t think Caitlin would approve.”

Noah pretended to think about that.

“You have a point there. I guess we better stick to the original plan then.” He said, grinning.

“Works for me, since I kind of love you.”

“Same here, same here.” Noah said and placed a small kiss on his soon to be husband’s lips.

“You can’t do that yet!” Caitlin yelled at her parents. “You have to wait until the mister.. minister says it’s allowed.” The girl told them after Reid had corrected her.

Everyone laughed as the minister took his place.

“We are gathered here today for the marriage of Luke Snyder and Noah Mayer.”
