“Are you nervous? You know now the big day is finally here?”
“No, not really. I’m just so unbelievably close to burning this stupid tie.” Noah said frustrated. “I give up. Luke will just have to take me without a tie.”
“Oh come on, what would your mother say if she knew her little boy was getting married without a tie?” Winston said laughingly. “Come on, turn around, I’ll fix it for you. It’s just nerves.”
“I’m not nervous! I want this, I want to marry Luke. It’s just that stupid tie that hates me.”
“Your tie hates you? I thought that was yours and Luke’s thing, ties. You always give each other ties, for every occasion.”
“I know..it is our thing, everything between us started because of a tie. But this one hates me.” Noah sighed while his father fixed his tie.
“And the fact that you are getting married today to the love of your life has nothing to do with it? The fact that you’re literally shaking with nerves.. all has nothing to do with you not being able to knot your tie.”
“Ok maybe I’m a little nervous..” Noah admitted
“There, all done. You look great. Your mother would be proud of you.”
“I wish she could be here today..”
“She is. She’s looking down on us from up there, I just know she is. And if she was here she would tell you to stop being so sentimental and save your tears for your vows.” Winston said, straitening his son’s suit.
“Ugh don’t talk to me about my vows. I don’t know why we said we’d write our own vows. I’m marrying a writer for god sake, my vows will look terrible compared to his.” Noah said as he turned
around to face the mirror again.
“No they won’t.” Winston said, slapping Noah’s hands away from his tie. “If you forget your vows just tell him what’s in your heart. And if someone asks you a question just say ‘I do’.”
“I can’t believe you just quoted Four Weddings and a Funeral.”
“It was on TV the other day.. nothing else was on..” Winston muttered under his breath.
“Noah, we’re ready for you. He’s waiting for you.” Holden said after having knocked on the open door.
“Thanks, I’ll be right there.” Noah said and took a deep breath.
“Noah, don’t worry he’s as nervous as you are.”
Noah nodded, took one last glance in the mirror and then looked at Winston.
“Come on, let’s do this.”
Winston walked him to the beginning of the aisle where Luke was waiting for them. They had decided they would walk down the aisle together since there wouldn’t be a bride to wait for.
“You look amazing.” Luke said when Noah stood next to him.
“So do you” Noah said and tried his best to fight the urge to kiss Luke senseless there and then.
“You take good care of him.” Winston said to Luke. “Take good care of each other.” He said and hugged the man that would be his son in law in a matter of minutes.
“We will, I promise.” Luke assured him.
“And you. You remember what I told you.” Winston told Noah as he pulled him in for a hug.
“I will. Thanks for being here today dad. It means a lot to me. To us.” Noah told his father.
“My son is getting married today, where else would I be?”
Winston took his seat in the front row next to Luke’s parents and the boys walked down the aisle together. The minister made a short speech and Noah forgot there was anyone in the world apart from Luke when he said his vows.
“So, Luke, do you take this man to be your lawful wedded husband and promise to love and support him for as long as you both shall live?” the minister asked
“I do.” Luke said, never taking his eyes off Noah as he slid the ring on his finger.
“And you Noah, Noah? Noah? Noah wake up. Noah baby come on, wake up”
The minister’s voice had changed into Luke’s and Noah slowly opened his eyes realising he was lying on the sofa in his and Luke’s apartment.
“It was all a dream..” he said more to himself than to Luke.
“Yeah you dozed off while I was cooking. I made soup. Well it's one of those just add water things.. but you always say you like those.” Luke said and sat down next to his boyfriend. “Hey, did you have a bad dream?”
Noah shook his head.
“No, it was a really good dream... too good.”
“Too good? Why?”
“It was our wedding day.. and you looked amazing... and my dad was there.. he was fixing my tie.. and he was happy for us.. it all looked so real.. but it was all a dream.”
“I’m sorry babe.” Luke said and wrapped his arms around his boyfriend. “But you should have known it was a dream, because when we get married I will be the one fixing your tie.”
“Hey, sorry I’m a little late, my shift ran late.” Noah said as he entered Mason’s office.
“That’s ok. We’ll just have to stay a little longer then.” Mason said and gestured for Noah to sit down on the small sofa in the corner of the room.
“Uhm.. I kind of promised Luke I would be home early..” Noah trailed off
“Call him, explain to him that your project comes first. I’m sure he’ll understand. You can use my phone.” Mason said and held out his phone.
“No thanks. And I really can’t stay long. It’s our anniversary today and we wanted to spend the evening together, at home, no interruptions. But between his job and mine and now this I’ve barely seen
him all day.” Noah explained.
“Ok. I understand. Do you have an hour for me then? There are a few things in your script I would like to talk to you about. ”
Noah glanced at his watch, then sighed and put his backpack down on the floor and sat down.
“One hour. I want to get home to my happy boyfriend, not to my bags waiting by the door.”
“Sure, sure, I understand, one hour. I just want your undivided attention for the next 60 minutes so if you could switch your phone off please..”
“What? But what if Luke calls me. He’s waiting for me at home.”
“Yes, so you said.”
“Sorry.. I’ll switch it off.” Noah said while pushing the off button on his phone.
“I only want to help you. And since you barely have time to work on this project I want to make the most of the time we have together.” Mason said as he sat down next to Noah.
“I’m sorry, I don’t want to look ungrateful or anything. I really do appreciate your help.”
“You don’t have to apologise Noah. I know what it’s like to have to choose between love and art. But like I said in our first meeting, you have to choose the art.”
“I don’t think Luke will see it that way..” Noah said and warily glanced at the script on Mason’s lap.
“If Luke really loves you as much as you say he does, he will understand. If he doesn’t then I guess he doesn’t love you quite as much.”
“How can you say that? You don’t even know him, you don’t know anything about our relationship.” Noah said and felt himself getting angry.
“Calm down, calm down.” Mason said, patting Noah’s knee. “Let’s just focus on this for tonight and leave any boyfriends that might be out there out of it.” he said and sat back on the sofa putting his
arm on the back of it.
“Is.. that my script?” Noah asked as he glanced over the first page, feeling slightly embarrassed by the large number of red stripes and notes.
“Yes. It’s starting to look pretty good but you still need to change some things here and there.” Mason said, flicking through the script.
“Some things here and there? There is more red than black on that page.” Noah said, leaning back to get a better look at the page.
“Oh come on Noah, as a film maker you have to be able to handle some constructive criticism.”
“Right.. seeing that much red.. just doesn’t help my confidence a lot.”
“You’re one of my best students Noah, don’t let some red stripes throw you off.” Mason said, putting his hand on Noah’s shoulder, giving it a reassuring squeeze.
“Do you have a copy of those notes for me?” Noah said a little while later. “My neck is starting to hurt a little from reading at this weird angle.”
Mason looked up from the script on his lap and suddenly his face was a little too close to Noah’s for Noah’s liking. He tried to back away slightly but Mason’s hand on his shoulder made sure he
“Sorry, the copy machine broke down this morning so we’ll have to make do with just this copy.” Mason said his gaze fixed on Noah’s lips. “How badly do you want to pass this class Noah?” he said and smiled a little.
“Huh? What? What do you mean?”
“Well.. If you’re nice to me.. I’ll be nice to you..” Mason said and closed the distance between his and Noah’s faces by kissing him.
It took Noah a few seconds to wrap his mind around what was happening and push Mason away.
“What the hell?!”
“What is it Noah? Don’t tell me you hadn’t noticed you really are my favourite student.” Mason said and leaned in to kiss Noah again.
“Get away from me!” Noah said and jumped to his feet and backed away from Mason.
“Do you want to fail this class Noah?” Mason said as he slowly got up from the sofa. “I can make you or break you. It all depends on how.. happy you make me.”
“Get. The Fuck. Away. From Me.” Noah said slowly, picking his backpack up from the floor. “I am not sleeping with you to pass this class. Screw you.”
“Are you sure about that Noah?” Mason asked sweetly. “I have contacts in the industry you know.”
“Good for you.” Noah spat. “Just leave me the fuck alone.” He said and walked out of Mason’s office, slamming the door behind him.
He pulled his phone out of his pocket, switched it on and pressed a few buttons.
“Dean Brewster, this is Noah Mayer, I’d like a different advisor please.”
