When Luke woke up he realised he wasn't in his own bed and that Noah was lying next to him. He looked around the room and wondered how he had ended up in Noah’s room last night. And more importantly how he could get back to his own room without Emma noticing they had broken the rules. Slowly the previous night was coming back to him. He couldn’t sleep because he had been worried about Noah and went to his room to check if he was alright. Noah had been feeling a little under the weather for a few days but last night he had looked really bad. Luke had gotten into bed with him and they talked until they had fallen asleep.Luke couldn’t help but think this is how he wanted to go to sleep every night and wake up every morning. But as long as they were still living at the farm with Emma’s rules that wasn’t very likely to happen. Next to him Noah was slowly waking up too and Luke gave him a little good morning kiss.

“Hey you” Noah said softly smiled at his boyfriend.

“Hey how are you feeling? You still don’t look so great.” Luke said sweetly and stroked the side of his boyfriend’s face.

“I’m fine.” Noah said unconvincingly.

“I think you’ve got a temperature” Luke said feeling Noah’s forehead and ignoring the millionth I’m fine Noah had thrown at him since he started feeling sick a few days ago.

“Luke, I said I’m fine.” Noah said annoyed as he sat up in bed. “I think you should just go back to your own room before Emma catches you here and kicks me out.”

“She won’t catch me and she won’t kick you out. And technically we’re not doing anything wrong.” Luke said with a smirk.

“What are you talking about?” Noah asked confused.

“Well she said that MY room is off limits.. she never said anything about your room.” Luke said now smiling brightly.

“I don’t think Emma is going to see it that way babe.” Noah said as he got out of bed.

“What are you doing?” Luke asked as he watched Noah walk around the room.

“Uh.. I’m looking for a work shirt and a pair of jeans, that I’m going to put on after I’ve had a shower.” Noah answered and continued his search for a Java t-shirt.

"You’re not going to work Noah. You’re sick. You can tell me you’re fine as many times as you want but I know you’re not. They won’t fire you for calling in sick one day you know.” Luke said as he got out of bed and walked over to Noah and put his arms around his waist.

“I know but I won’t have to call in sick, because I’m not sick.” Noah said and gave Luke a quick peck on the lips. “It’s really sweet of you to worry about me but I’m fine, really.”

Half an hour later both boys were sitting at the kitchen table trying to avoid Emma’s knowing looks and get through breakfast without Aaron filling in the blanks on the previous night’s sleeping arrangements.

“Are you alright darling?” Emma asked Noah sweetly.

“Yes I’m fine, really. Thank you.” Noah answered politely and turned his attention back to his breakfast.

“Are you sure? You’ve hardly touched your breakfast and you look a bit pale.” Emma said concerned.

“Spare your breath, grandma. He won’t listen. I told him to stay home for the day but he insists he is fine.” Luke said rolling his eyes at his boyfriend.

“I really am fine.” Noah said glancing at the clock. “And late for work if I don’t leave now, you want a ride?” he asked Luke.

“Sure, even if it’s only to keep an eye on you.” Luke said getting up from the table and following his boyfriend out the front door.

“Don’t.. ask it” Noah said holding up his hand to stop Luke from asking the same question again.

“I already know the answer anyway.” Luke said slightly sarcastic.

“Oh come on Luke. It’s just a cold. I’m not dying and I’m not sick, ok?” Noah said looking his boyfriend in the eye.

“You’ve been around my family for too long. That Snyder stubbornness is rubbing off on you.” Luke said only half joking.

“I have a class in 15 minutes so I should get going.. but I wish I could stay here with you. Keep an eye on you.” He said softly.

“If it puts your mind at ease, we’ll have lunch together ok? We’ll go to Al’s or something.” Noah said smiling.

“Yeah, I’d like that. I’ll see you at noon then. Take it easy ok?” Luke said before kissing his boyfriend goodbye and walking away to get to his class.

Noah sighed and rubbed a hand over his face to clear his head and walked into Java.

“You look like death warmed up man.” Jeff said as he saw his colleague walk into the cafe and taking his place behind the counter.

“Thanks, good morning to you too.” Noah said rolling his eyes.

“Hey it’s just the truth man. If I felt the way you look I wouldn’t be standing here that’s for sure.” Jeff said as he handed a customer their coffee.

“Well I’m fine, I wish people would stop telling me I’m sick and I should stay home.” Noah said annoyed and got to work.

He wasn’t feeling well at all but Luke was right he is stubborn. The morning progressed and Noah started feeling worse by the hour. He glanced at the clock, 11.45. Luke would be there in 15 minutes. I’ll feel better after I’ve seen Luke and had something to eat, Noah told himself.

“Hey Jeff, do you mind if I take my lunch break 15 minutes earlier? I’ll cover for you later but I just need to sit down for a minute ok?” Noah asked his colleague who nodded to him in reply.

Noah walked over to a free table near the door and sat down and laid his head down on his arms on the table. He was hot and sweating and needed the cold air coming in with every customer to cool off enough for Luke not to notice anything.

I’ll stay home tomorrow if I’m not feeling better, he thought but knew he wouldn’t. Because no matter how hard he tried he just couldn’t get col. Mayer’s voice out of his head. The voice was telling him to be a man and just get back to work. That he shouldn’t be sitting there feeling sorry for himself because of a simple cold. That he should take a look at himself to see himself looking like the pathetic excuse for a man he is. “I’m sorry” Noah mumbled softly and felt a tear run down his face.

“Noah? Noah, wake up.” Noah heard a familiar voice say and felt fingers run through his hair.

He slowly opened his eyes and looked into Luke’s warm brown eyes.

“Hey sleepyhead. My class ran late, I’m sorry. I didn’t think waiting for me would be that exhausting.” Luke said jokingly.

"Huh, what? Sorry I uh.. must’ve dozed off.. Noah said rubbing the sleep out of his eyes.

“I was only about 20 minutes late but Jeff said you’ve been out for almost half an hour.” Luke said sweetly while rubbing Noah’s leg.

“You really look terrible Noah. Come home with me. Let me look after you” Noah nodded and got up from the table and was surprised to notice someone had put his jacket over his shoulders.

“Jeff, did that. He didn’t want you to get any sicker sitting by that door.” Luke explained as he saw the puzzled look on his boyfriend’s face.

He put his hand in the pocket of Noah’s jeans and pulled out his car keys.

“Don’t think I’m going to let you drive.”

By the time they got to the farm Noah wanted nothing more than to curl up in his bed and not leave his bedroom for the next few days.

Partly because he was feeling horrible and partly because he was embarrassed that he had fallen asleep at work and Luke had taken him home like a little kid.

“I’ll get some blankets and we’ll just watch some TV from the sofa in the parlour ok? Or do you want to go to bed?” Luke asked as they walked into the farmhouse kitchen.

“The sofa in the parlour sounds good. But I’m in charge of the remote control.” Noah said jokingly and Luke smiled at him before running up the stairs to get the blankets and pillows from their beds.

“Wow Noah you look like hell, man.” Aaron said looking up from the game he was playing on Luke’s laptop.

“Yeah well that’s pretty much how I feel.” Noah answered and walked into the parlour and made himself comfortable on the sofa.

When Luke returned with the blankets Noah was asleep. He put one of the blankets over him and went back into the kitchen.

“Doesn’t nurse Luke need to look after the patient?” Aaron joked as he saw his brother come back into the kitchen.

“He’s asleep. So I’ll just let him sleep for a while and make some soup for him. He hardly ate anything this morning and we obviously didn’t stop for lunch on the way home.” Luke said as he was rummaging through Emma’s kitchen cabinets to find the ingredients for the soup.

“I thought you loved Noah?” Aaron asked seriously.

“What? Of course I love him. What kind of stupid question is that?” Luke asked both angry and confused.

“I was just wondering.. that well.. If you love him as much as you say you do.. why are you trying to poison him with your cooking?” Aaron said and broke out in laughter.

“Oh very funny Aaron, I’m glad that divorce didn’t damage your sense of humour. It’s still non-existent.” Luke said laughingly and threw one of Emma’s handtowels at his brother’s head.

A few hours later both Luke and Aaron had had some of Luke’s soup and Aaron even admitted it was good.

“I think I should wake him up now. He’s been out for 3 hours.” Luke said as he started to put some soup in a bowl for Noah.

He walked into the parlour, carefully put the tray with the soup on it on Emma’s beloved coffee table and crouched down next to the sofa. He softly stroked his boyfriend’s face to wake him up.

“Noah open those beautiful blue eyes for me.” Luke whispered in Noah’s ear and kissed his cheek.

Noah slowly started to wake up.

“Hey how are you feeling?” Luke asked as he watched his boyfriend sit up on the sofa.

“Uh.. better.. I guess I just needed some sleep. How long have I been asleep for?” He asked his voice still thick from sleep.

“About 3 hours. Here I made you some soup, it’s my grandma’s recipe and even Aaron thinks it’s eatable.” Luke said smiling as he placed the tray on Noah’s lap.

“You didn’t have to do all this for me..” Noah said softly, feeling very self conscious all of a sudden.

“I know I didn’t have to but I wanted to. And I was hungry so I did it for myself too. Luke said smiling and snuggled up to Noah on the sofa, underneath the blankets.

"Now while you eat your soup, I’ll find us something to watch on TV." He said as he triumphantly waved the remote control in front of Noah’s face.

Noah laughed at him while he ate his soup and was pleasantly surprised when Luke picked out some old black and white film for them to watch.

Growing up with Col. Mayer as a father on various army bases all over America had never given Noah a sense of a real home. His bedroom had always been the same. No pictures or posters on the walls or even toys lying around. Whenever he got sick as a kid Col. Mayer would insist he’d get up and get dressed. A real man wouldn’t stay home because of some simple cold or the flu. A real man would just get on with life and do his duties. That’s the way Noah was raised and somehow he still lived by his father’s rules to a certain level. But with every day he spent with the Snyders and with Luke especially those rules became more and more vague. Just another bad memory from his childhood. The Snyders had given him that feeling of home he had missed when he was growing up. And most of all Luke had given him the feeling someone cared about him, that someone loved him.

He decided there and then he would stop looking back and feel miserable and instead look to the future, to his future with Luke and being a part of the ever expanding Snyder clan.
