Story Notes:
Written for the What Did You Do? prompt meme.
Prompt: in the air

I don’t know what it is about today, but it’s like your name is in the air, floating on the wind, dancing like a balloon that hovers just out of reach, its string tantalising my fingertips.

Everywhere I go, there’s something to remind me of you, something that tugs at my memory, brushes against my senses like the ghost of your hands, leaving a tingle that just won’t quit.

I don’t know why.

I don’t know why today is any different from all of the other days I’ve spent since you left; days that begin and end in grief and emptiness; days that I try to fill with meaning and motion; exhausted hours that bleed into each other, no tourniquet to staunch their flow.

Nights that stretch for eons, my darkness filled with despair and black regret; no stars to wish upon or light my way; nothing to guide me, to lead me from the shadows of my own making.

But this morning…this morning, I woke with your name on my lips. I know I said it out loud. I know I breathed life into it as it hung in the air, surrounding me with its echo, filling me with your warmth.

And it follows me still, tugging at my consciousness, teasing me on every street corner, every park bench, following me through the familiar streets that we once walked together.

How many times have I seen you today, said your name out loud only to have you turn, a dark-haired stranger? How many times today have I heard your laugh, smelled your scent on the wind, felt your nearness, only to be disappointed?

So here I am, staring at the phone, my heart beating out your name – Noah…Noah – as I slowly press the numbers that will connect me to you.

It’s time.

I knew it the moment I woke this morning. It’s time to take back my life, to leave the grief behind and start living again.

I listen to the rings, my eyes tightly closed, blocking out everything else around me.

And then you’re there. Your voice warm and inviting, memories breaking over me as I struggle to breathe, to hold in the emotion that threatens to drown me. I can’t speak.

Then suddenly…

And I know I’m home.
